June 14 Update
Monday, 14 June 2010 10:21
Hello Highland Vista Swim Team!
Wow, last week was a busy one with lots of great swim team activities.  Our first home meet went very well. The camp out was a big success. Thank you Matt and Mandy Nagore for all your hard work making the evening a great time.  It was good to see many first time campers pitching tents.  The weather could not have been better.  I even saw people sporting jackets and sweatshirts as the evening wore on...shocking for Tucson in June!
This week we have two dual meets (one home, one away), team pictures and the Desert Rat Invitational.
Pictures
Dave Sanders Photography will be at the pool on Wednesday, June 16 for team photos. Setup for the team picture will start at 7:30 am followed by individual portraits and/or action shots. Payment must be made in advance.  The order envelopes are in the family folders. Please contact Angel Emerson at 296-9389 if you have any questions.
Speaking of pictures, if you have been snapping some shots at the recent meets and are willing to share the pictures, please send them to Peter Gariepy.  They will be used to freshen up the website and fill the gallery page.
Dual Meets
Jewish Community Center (home) - Tuesday, June 15 at Highland Vista.  Please have your swimmers at the pool by 4:45 pm for the 5:00 pm warm-ups.  The JCC is in the San Pedro League of the SAAA with us this year.
Green Hills (away) - Thursday, June 17 at Green Hills.  Please have your swimmers at the pool by 5:15 pm for the 5:30 pm warm up.
Sign Out Book
With vacation plans picking up, do not forget to sign your swimmers out of any meet that you will not be attending.  The coaches do the meet lineups several days in advance so the sooner you sign out for any absences the better.
Official Times
Working on Goal Buster's with your kids?  Visit the meet results page on the swim team website to pickup official times for your swimmers.  Results from the June 10 Sabino Vista Hills meet are online.
You can find official times from the invitationals (9-18, Desert Rat, and Muppet Meet) at the SAAA website.  The results from Saturday's 9-18 Invitational are now posted online.
Desert Rat
Rounding out this week is the Don Baker Desert Rat.  This invitational will be at the Ft. Lowell Pool, just like last week's 9-18 Invitational.  All swimmers competing in the Desert Rat should be at the Ft. Lowell Pool by 6:45 AM.
We still need 4 people to volunteer for timing an event at the Desert Rat.  Timing is easy and a great view of all the races.  Please visit the volunteer wiki to sign up as a timer at the Desert Rat.
Wiki Messages
In an effort to keep email traffic to a minimum, I have turned off the update notifications feature for the volunteer wiki.  If any of you really, really miss getting all those update notifications from the wiki just let me know.
Have fun, stay cool, and see you at the pool!

June 11 Update
Friday, 11 June 2010 10:37
Here is some information about the Invitationals and a reminder about the Gaslight.
Ft. Lowell Pool
Tomorrow is the first of three Invitationals to be held at Ft. Lowell Pool.  Unlike the Amphi H.S. pool deck space is very limited at Ft. Lowell.  Look for our team area, it may be outside the fence.  Shade will also be a bit of an issue, there is far less of it already at the pool.  Our shade brigade will be out in force early tomorrow morning, with our three ez-up structures.  We know those three structures will not be enough shade for all Highland Vista families.  If you have a shade structure please consider bringing it with you to Ft. Lowell.  You can never have too much shade in Tucson in June
Gaslight Night
This is the last weekend for Gaslight ticket sales.  Donna Singleton will be at Ft. Lowell tomorrow for the 9-18 Invitational and at the Highland Vista pool in the evening for the campout.  Please see Donna to purchase your tickets.
Thanks,
Ed Murphy

June 7 Update
Sunday, 06 June 2010 15:07
This week is another busy, and exciting, week by the pool. There are dual meets, an Invitational and the camp out all happening this week. Here's the scoop...

Dual Meets

  • Ventana Canyon (away) - Tuesday, June 8th. Ventana Canyon is in the SAAA's San Pedro league, so this meet represents our first league meet. Please have your swimmers at Ventana Canyon by 5:15 pm. As the away team, our warm-up starts at 5:30 pm. Charlie Singleton let me know that access to Ventana is restricted due to construction along Sunrise and definitely around the Kolb intersection. An alternate route is taking Craycroft north of Sunrise. It loops East and turns into Kolb. Then it is a left onto Clubhouse Dr which avoids the Kolb/Sunrise intersection which will be very jammed up around the 5pm rush hour.

  • Sabino Vista Hills (home) - Thursday, June 10th. Ahhh, it will be good to be racing at home again. Sabino Vista Hills is also in the San Pedro league, so this is our second league meet of the season. Please have your swimmers at Highland Vista by 4:45 pm. As the home team, our warm-up starts at 5:00 pm. The volunteer sign-up page on the volunteer wiki looks really good! As of Sunday afternoon, we only need one more stroke & turn judge and someone to lead the 8-under round-up. Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered, all other positions for the Sabino Vista Hills meet are full.

9-18 Invitational

Saturday, June 12th is the 2010 SAAA 9-18 Invitational. Due to the construction at the Amphi H.S. pool, this year's Invitationals will be held at the Ft. Lowell pool. The assignments (9-18 vs Desert Rat) are posted by the pool. All swimmers age 9 and up will go to one, or the other, of the first two Invitationals. For those who are new to the team and might not understand how the Invitationals work, the 9-18 is a "faster than" event and the Desert Rat is a "slower than" event. To qualify for the 9-18 you must swim faster than the qualifier times in the events. To qualify for the Desert Rat you must swim slower than the qualifier times in the events. Coach Ed will let you know at practice when you need to be at Ft. Lowell, if you are in the 9-18 this coming Saturday. It will be early (like 6:30 AM), so be prepared for an early start to your weekend.

We need 4 more people to volunteer for timers at the 9-18 Invitational. Timing is fun, easy, and a great way to watch the races. We also need, another person to help with shade brigade duties. Please visit the 9-18 volunteer wiki page to sign up for one of these positions.

Camp Out

The first social event of the swim season is this Saturday night at the Highland Vista pool. The annual team camp out is a Wahoo tradition going back a few years. The team will supply hamburgers and hot dogs. You bring a beverage, and a side dish to share. If you want to spend the night at the pool, you are welcome to bring your tent and setup around the pool grounds. Last year we had a big turn out, the pool grounds were nearly filled to capacity with tents. It is a lot of fun, and one event the kids always look forward to each year. Remember, this is a family event, not an adult social hour. Parent's are responsible for their children's safety at all times. Please limit your guest list to family members of HVAC swimmers.

Snack bar

Does anyone have a Sam's Club membership and would be willing to buy something for the snack bar? You will be fully reimbursed. We need the jumbo pretzels and in past years, Sam's Club is the only place we've been able to find them. If you are able and willing to get the jumbo pretzels, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

And if all that is not enough swim team for a week, don't forget we have morning practice, Monday through Friday, at the Highland Vista pool.

Have a great week! I will see you around the pool.

June 1 Update
Tuesday, 01 June 2010 08:53
Hello Highland Vista Swim Team!
June is upon us and that means swim team kicks into high gear.  We have lots of dual meets, and Saturday Invitationals to look forward to this month.  Here's some news and updates for this week.
Practice Schedule
Don't forget, practice has shifted to the morning now.  The times on the hvswimteam.org website are actual pool times.  Please have your swimmer there 15 minutes early for dry land warmups.
Pool Patrol
Please remember to look around you before you leave practice.  There are a lot of goggles, towels and other items being left behind on tables and in the grass.  Also, if you enjoy sitting in one of the pool's plastic chairs during practice please remember to put the chair back on the ramada before you leave.  It is important that we remain good partners with the neighborhood and pool board.  Please do you part and help ensure the pool is looking good when swim team is done with it.
Red/Black Results
The results from the Red/Black meet are in.  The top 4 times for each gender and stroke are on the leader board (by the snack bar).  The complete results are now on the hvswimteam.org website (Thanks Mary and Peter!)
Tucson Country Club
Our dual meet schedule gets underway this Thursday, June 3 with a meet at the TCC.  The meet starts at 6:00 PM with the away team (that's us) warming up at 5:30 PM.
Gaslight Tickets
Don't forget to get your tickets to the Highland Vista night at the Gaslight Theater.  We will be going to the Gaslight on June 27th this year.  Donna Singleton is coordinating the sale of tickets for the show.  She will be at the pool, during practice, on Monday and Friday mornings.  We have sold about half of the theater so far.  We need to give the Gaslight our final count by June 14th, so see Donna soon.
That's it for now folks.  Go Wahoos!
